It’s a critical part of the university education experience for instructors and students alike– the timetable of courses. Yi Xie from the Office of Education navigates this complex puzzle for the entire College of Health Sciences. Get to know her and how her work contributes to the fabric of the college’s community.

How do you describe your work to those who don’t work in your field?
My job is to make sure that every student can take the classes they need, every teacher has a room to teach in and everything runs smoothly without overlaps or conflicts. It’s like solving a giant, ever-changing puzzle where the pieces are students, teachers, classrooms and time slots.

I work with different departments to figure out what courses need to be offered, when they should happen and where they can take place. I also have to consider things like how many students are in each class, what kind of equipment or space is needed and making sure no one is scheduled to be in two places at once.

What led you to your current role?
I found that among all the tasks in my previous roles, I enjoy course scheduling the most. The process of fitting each piece of the puzzle together and ultimately creating a well-organized schedule brings me a great sense of fulfillment. I hope to do my best to support faculties, building strong and trusting relationships with them, and hopefully creating a space where we can learn from each other and grow together.

What’s something your co-workers don’t know about you?
Last year, I completed ASIST: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training and received my certification. Although it has an expiration date, I want people to know that I am here to help anyone who is struggling and needs someone to talk to. I am not a professional, but I hope to support those in need to the best of my ability.

How do you navigate challenges?
Accept it and solve it!

What’s your favourite distraction?
Spending time with my dog, taking him on road trips or to the dog park is my favourite thing. I also love traveling, exploring different foods and cultures, and learning about local stories and traditions.

If you were enrolling in one course, program, or degree within the College of Health Sciences right now, what would it be?
If given the opportunity, I would love to take some courses from the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - Physical Therapy so that I can help my grandmother better manage and alleviate the physical pain she experiences.
