Elevator intercom software upgrade

Riders will not be able to use intercoms while work is taking place, but help will be available in case of an emergency.

12 May 2025

The software for elevator intercoms, also known as help phones, is being upgraded across multiple campuses. Riders will not be able to use elevator intercoms while work is taking place, but help will be available in case of an emergency.

All elevators on U of A campuses are monitored. The system that connects elevator intercoms to the Unified Communication Centre is being upgraded to ensure the software is up to date. This will result in the temporary loss of intercom service while the upgrade is taking place.

Work will take place on May 27, 28 and 29 between 8 a.m and 4 p.m. The upgrade will affect all elevators on North Campus, South Campus, Campus Saint-Jean and the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens. Notices will be posted inside and outside elevators where work is taking place. Elevators at Enterprise Square and Augustana Campus will not be affected.

You will not be able to use elevator intercoms during the upgrade, so we encourage you to keep a personal communication device with you when riding the elevator. If you experience an elevator outage, follow the procedure on the Emergency Information + Procedures Outage web page.

If you hear an alarm inside an elevator, someone may need assistance. Please follow the procedure on the Emergency Information + Procedures Outage web page.
