About the Show

FAB Gallery is pleased to present new works by Raneece Buddan, Artist in Residence, Department of Art & Design during the fall 2023 term. In this vessel I am… is curated by Nura Ali and is the first in a series of exhibition projects taking place at FAB gallery throughout winter and spring of 2024. These exhibitions have been funded through an Activation Project Grant from The Alberta Foundation for the Arts and will prioritise and elevate the vision and artistic voices of Indigenous and Black curators and artists.

About the Artist

Raneece Buddan is a Jamaican visual artist who resides in Treaty 6 territory, Amiswaciwâskahikan (Edmonton). She completed her BFA in Art and Design with Distinction at the University of Alberta in 2020. Raneece’s artistic practice is an ongoing journey of reconnection. It is an attempt to learn more about her cultural identity as an Afro and Indo-Jamaican through material exploration and textile research. Her pieces are self portraits that show the beauty of merging these cultures while also addressing the generational loss of connection to culture and ancestry as a result of slavery, indentured servitude and ongoing assimilation in the Caribbean. As an interdisciplinary artist, Raneece finds joy in a well-rounded practice of oil painting, woodworking, clay sculpting, resin casting, printmaking and weaving.

About the Curator

Nura Ali is a visual artist, writer, and curator living and working in Calgary, Alberta. She received a BFA in Visual Art from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver; a BA in English Literature, Art History, and Italian from the University of Leicester; and a BA in History from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her wide-ranging practise investigates the linguistic and cognitive scaffolding underpinning the ways in which we create meaning. Nura has shown her work across Canada and internationally, has received numerous awards and grants, most recently from the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Canada Institute, Calgary Arts Development, and the Rozsa Foundation, and has taken part in various national and international residencies.
